This iconic photo was taken on May 25th, 1965 in Lewiston, Maine. The boxers, Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston had fought the previous year, when Cassius Clay who was a 7–1 underdog had beaten the World Heavyweight Champion. In their first fight Liston gave up at the opening of the seventh round.
Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston
After beating Liston, Clay started going by the name Cassius X before being renamed Muhammad Ali by Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad. The boxers met again for their anticipated rematch and of course Muhammad Ali won with a first-round knockout. In this image Ali is shouting and gesturing at Liston to get up, which he did before being dropped for the final time with a short hard right to the jaw.
