Sharing Rations

Written by: George Chittenden : 06 Oct 2019

This photo was taken in 1941 and supposedly shows a German soldier sharing his rations with a Russian mother. The image was captured by a photographer for the 291st Division of the Wehrmacht George Gundlach. Tragically millions of Russians starved to death during WWII as a direct result of the German army, which makes this image so powerful.

So is it a completely staged photograph? Possibly, countless images like this were used for propaganda purposes, on all sides. Nowadays it’s hard to look at an image like this without assuming it’s staged, but you never know. Perhaps the generous soldier in this image really was a good guy, and he will never get the credit that perhaps he deserves. I guess we will never know for sure.

We would like to invite you to claim a place on 'The History Projects' hall of recognition. You might have noticed the Hexagons on the sides of the screen, this is our recognition wall. You can have a picture of your choice on our recognition wall, whether it be you, your dog or even a family member for just £5 a month. This money helps us keep the webpage and our social media content alive and also pays for the other great work we do such as; making documentaries, visiting schools and delivering other great community projects.

Of course, you do not have to give £5 a month. If you would like to donate less or more then of course that is fine, £5 is just how much it costs to get a hexagon. You could sponsor 3 hexagons if you choose or just donate £1 a month or any amount of your choice.

Every contribution we receive from readers such as yourself helps us, help others, and allows us to make sure that the lessons history has taught us will never be lost.
