Feeding Polar Bears
Written by: George Chittenden : 31 Jul 2019
This incredible photo was taken in 1950 and shows soldiers feeding polar bears condensed milk. The image was captured during a routine military expedition in Chukchi Peninsula, Soviet Union. The temperature there can often fall as low as 40 C below zero. The soldiers had a supply of tins of condensed milk, so they would simply open them and give them to the bears who in turn would feed their cubs.
The milk had a long shelf life and wasn’t rationed, so was easily available in the USSR. The military vehicle they are feeding the bear from is a GT-SM GAZ-34036. As you can see it’s a tracked vehicle and is fully amphibious. It was designed for various roles, but mainly as a troop carrier.
