Relaxing At The Beach
Written by: George Chittenden : 11 Oct 2019
This amazing photo was taken on October 27th, 1962. That day would be referred to as “Black Saturday” by both the President Kennedy and members of the National Security Council. During the Cuban missile crisis America was feeling under pressure. So much, the US Army deployed anti-aircraft Hawk missiles on a Florida beach in Key West.
This image is a stark reminder of how close America came to conflict with Cuba and Russia back in the early 1960’s. At the time this photo was taken America had 156 tactical aircraft ready to strike Cuba, backed up by almost 700 more strike planes that were on the ground or at sea. The US Air Force and the US Navy were prepared to conduct continuous air strikes until all Cuban missile sites and the Cuban Air Force had been destroyed. Thankfully the crisis was resolved using diplomacy.
