On This Day… The Death Of The Prophet Muhammad
Written by: George Chittenden : 21 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 8th June back in 632 AD when the founder of Islam, Muhammad, died in Medina at the age of 62 or 63, it’s impossible to know for sure. Muhammad united Arabia, with the Quran as well as his teachings and practices forming the basis of Islamic religious belief. By the time of his death, most of the Arabian Peninsula had converted to Islam. He lived an interesting life, and regularly spent several nights in a cave, deep in prayer, which is where he was supposedly visited by Gabriel and received his first revelation from God.
A few years later, in the year 610 AD he started preaching these revelations openly, stating that he was a prophet and messenger of God. His life wasn’t all peace and prayer though. In 629 AD, after years of fighting intermittent wars with Meccan tribes he gathered an army ten-thousand strong and marched on the city of Mecca, which he conquered with relatively little bloodshed. Muhammad fell ill several days prior to his death and suffered from a fever. He died with his head resting on his wife Aisha's lap and was buried where he died, in her house in Medina.
