On This Day… Malcolm X’s Assasination!
Written by: George Chittenden : 07 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 21st February, back in 1965 when Malcolm X was assassinated by Nation of Islam members while speaking at a rally in New York City. The controversial black leader who once called for a 'blacks-only' state in the US, became a loyal minister of the Nation of Islam after meeting their leader Elijah Muhammad in prison.
Malcolm X became a powerful figure in their movement, until Elijah Muhammad began to see Malcolm as a threat. In the end Malcolm X was suspended from the Nation of Islam in late 1963 following a comment he made regarding President Kennedy’s assassination. In June 1964 he founded the Organisation of Afro-American Unity, which grew quickly in strength.
Surprisingly, Malcolm X’s home was firebombed a week before his assassination. A fantastic orator, Malcolm X was admired by the African American community in New York and across America.
