On This Day… A Turning Point In World War Two
Written by: George Chittenden : 27 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 28th November, back in 1943 when the first wartime strategy meeting of WW2 between the "Big Three" Allied leaders took place. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Soviet leader Josef Stalin met in the Soviet Union's embassy in Tehran, Iran. The leaders discussed Operation Overlord which included the D Day Landings in Normandy, which at that time were scheduled for May 1944.
The meeting, known as the Tehran conference was successful, and it resulted in the Allied commitment to open a second front against Nazi Germany. A separate agreement which was signed at the meeting pledged the three leaders to recognize Iran's independence.
In 1940 the Iranian government had stated their neutrality in the war, and then in 1941 following the invasion of the USSR by Germany, Iran found itself stuck between two great powers, and was unwilling to cooperate with either. On August 25th, 1941 a combined Anglo-Soviet force invaded Iran, in an undeclared surprise attack.
