On This Day… The Tomb That Was Lost In The Desert!
Written by: George Chittenden : 14 Jun 2019
It was on this day, 26th November, back in 1922 when archaeologist Howard Carter and his partner Lord Carnarvon entered the tomb of Tutankhamen, which had been buried by the sands of Egypt for more than 3,000 years! Weeks earlier, on the 4th November, Carter had discovered steps leading to an ancient sealed doorway in the Valley of the Kings. When they finally broke through after several anxious weeks, they were thrilled to find it virtually intact, with its treasures untouched.
The men, who were accompanied by Lord Carnarvon’s daughter, Lady Evelyn Herbert, began exploring the four rooms of the tomb. It wasn’t until the 16th February though, when Howard Carter finally opened the door to the very last chamber. Inside lay a sarcophagus with three coffins nested inside one another.
The last was made of solid gold and contained the mummified body of Tutankhamen, pharaoh of the 18th dynasty. Among the treasures found in the tomb were golden shrines, statues, a chariot, jewellery and even weapons. Many believe it’s the greatest archaeological discovery of our time.
