On This Day… The Surrender Of The High Seas Fleet
Written by: George Chittenden : 13 Jun 2019
It was on this day, 21st November, back in 1918 when the Royal Navy secured its greatest victory with the surrender of Germany's mighty navy. World War One had ended on land ten days earlier, and it was on November 21st when the Royal Navy sailed the largest fleet to ever leave Britain's shores and headed for a final rendezvous with its mortal enemy… the German High Seas Fleet!

The Royal Navy operations code name was ZZ. It involved more than 40 battleships/battlecruisers and an incredible 150 cruisers and destroyers who joined Britain’ fleet as it cruised out of the Firth of Forth towards the open water of the North Sea, where the surrender took place. It wasn’t until the following June though when the German ships - ten battleships, five battlecruisers, five cruisers and 32 destroyers were scuttled at Scapa Flow in Scotland.
