On This Day… An Angel Called Moroni
Written by: George Chittenden : 21 Sep 2019
It was on this day, 21st Sept, back in 1823 when Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, was supposedly visited for the first time by an angel named Moroni. When Joseph Smith was fourteen he apparently prayed to god for guidance and advice on what religion to follow and both God and Jesus appeared and told him the true church of Jesus Christ was not on the earth and they had chosen Joseph to restore it.
Years later the angel Moroni appeared and told him the location of the golden plates, which were inscribed with a Judeo-Christian history of an ancient American civilization. Apparently, Moroni was a prophet-warrior who was the last to write on the golden plates. Moroni buried them before he died after a great battle between two pre-Columbian civilizations.
In 1830, Smith published what he said was an English translation of these plates called the Book of Mormon. He also organised the Church of Christ, calling it a restoration of the early Christian church, and its members were later called Latter Day Saints or Mormons. Whether or not you’re a believer there is no denying that Joseph Smith shaped the world we all live in.
