On This Day… The Day Adolf Hitler Published Volume One Of Mein Kampf
Written by: George Chittenden : 21 May 2019
It was on this day, 18th July back in 1925 when the first volume of Adolf Hitler’s philosophical autobiography, Mein Kampf was published. Hitler created the book whilst he was incarcerated in Landsberg Prison, on charges of treason for his role in the infamous Beer Hall Putsch where he’d taken part in an attempted coup and failed to grasp control of the government in Bavaria. Adolf Hitler was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, but only served nine months after being granted early release. His time in prison was relatively easy, as he was treated as a hero, and received special treatment.
Whilst there he was allowed hundreds of visitors, and on his 35th birthday received between 30-40 guests. The man who over ten years later would create a global conflict decided to put his time to use and penned his four-hundred-page book outlining his political ideology and future plans for Germany. It was effectively a blueprint of his agenda for a Third Reich. The book sold a total of 9,473 copies in its first year. The second volume which focuses on national socialism, was published in 1927. The complete works began to sell in huge numbers once Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, and the rest I guess is history.
