The Statue Of Liberty In Paris
Written by: George Chittenden : 04 May 2019
This brilliant photo answers that age old question, what would the Statue of Liberty’s head look like in the middle of Paris? and the answer is pretty impressive. This photo was taken at the third Paris World's Fair, which is called an Exposition Universelle in French. The fair opened on May 1st, 1878 and was open all summer that year, until November 10th. The statue was the brain-child of French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi who decided he wanted to build a gift for the United States. He visited America to gather support for the huge project, and selected Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbour as the perfect site. The statue itself is of Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. Construction began in Paris in 1877. Bartholdi enlisted the help of Gustave Eiffel who designed a flexible iron skeleton which allowed the statue to shift in the wind without cracking. It wasn’t until 1885, when the statue was dismantled and shipped across the Atlantic to New York. The lady who would greet so many people in the years ahead, was ceremonially dedicated on Oct 28th, 1886. Did you find that interesting?
