On This Day

On This Day… The Crown Jewels Were Stolen!

Written by: George Chittenden : 04 May 2019

It was on this day, 9th May back in 1671 when a con man, Thomas Blood stole the crown jewels. It was a daring plan that nearly worked. Disguising himself as a clergyman he made friends with the Master of the Jewel House at the Tower of London, 77-year-old Talbot Edwards, and visited him several times. Finally, on this day he put his daring plan into action and went to see Edwards with three associates. He asked if they could see the royal regalia and when Edwards obliged they waited for him to open the cabinet before throwing a cloak over his head and hitting him on the head with a mallet.

According to all accounts the trio made off with the royal crown, orb and sceptre. When Talbot Edwards regained consciousness he raised the alarm and the thieves were apprehended. Thomas Blood refused to answer any questions, claiming he’d only answer to the king himself. The con man clearly had faith in his skills, and deservedly so. When he was granted an audience with Charles II he used all his powers of persuasion to talk his way out of the situation he’d found himself in. The King not only spared his life, but he granted him property in Ireland, an income of £500 a year and a pension for life. Who says that crime doesn’t pay?
