On This Day… Jimmy Hendrix Busted By Customs!

Written by: George Chittenden : 01 May 2019

It was on this day, 3rd May back in 1969 when at the height of his career, Jimi Hendrix was arrested by customs agents at Toronto International Airport for drug possession. The agents discovered a small amount of both heroin and hashish. Hendrix was released on bail for $10,000 and didn’t appear to worry about the prospect of facing a potential twenty-year sentence, as later that night at a gig he joked with the audience about the incident.

Well it turns out that he didn’t have much to worry about. In order to prove possession, they had to show that Hendrix knew the drugs were there. In his cross-examination of Canadian customs officials, defence attorney John O'Driscoll raised doubts about whether the narcotics belonged to Hendrix, who had no drug paraphernalia in his luggage or needle tracks on his arms. The trial lasted for three days, and the jury deliberated for eight hours before returning a not guilty verdict, acquitting Hendrix of all charges.

Are you already curious to discover what happened tomorrow? Have a great day.
