It was on Oct 9th, back in 1967 when socialist revolutionary and guerilla leader Che Guevara was executed in the Bolivian jungle. His real name was Ernesto Rafael Guevara de la Serna, and he was born to a wealthy family in 1928. Whilst studying medicine he took time out and travelled South America where he witnessed poverty and oppression, setting him on a new course.
During the fifties he met Fidel Castro, and helped Castro seize power from Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Guevara served as Castro’s right-hand man and Minister of Industry. Che Guevara was against North America’s domination of South America. Eventually Castro and Guevara parted company, and he left Cuba for Africa. When he resurfaced in Bolivia he was killed.
So, who killed him? Well, Guevara was captured by Bolivian forces who were backed by the American military. He was only 39 years old at the time of his death. Initially he was buried in an unmarked grave in Bolivia, however in 1997 his remains were sent to Cuba where they were reburied in a ceremony attended by President Fidel Castro and thousands of Cubans. So, folks what are your thoughts? His face is seen on t-shirts the world over as a symbol of anti-imperialism and revolution, so Che Guevara, freedom fighter or terrorist?
