Nixon’s Farewell Photo
Written by: George Chittenden : 23 Oct 2019
This interesting photo was taken on Aug 9th, 1974 outside the White House and features Richard Nixon performing a victory salute to his staff members as he boards a helicopter following his resignation. Now when I first saw this image, it gave me a real sense of déjà vu and it took me a while to figure it out. So if, like me, you have that feeling, let me put you out of your misery, it’s the film ‘Point Break’ starring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves.
Richard Nixon performing a victory salute
President Nixon became the first American President to resign following the Watergate scandal, involving illegal snooping and other activities by members of his staff which targeted political opponents. Nixon announced his decision to resign on television the night before this image was taken, and encouraged his fellow Americans to rally behind Gerald R. Ford. One month later he received a full pardon from President Ford.
