On This Day… The Sinking Of Argentina’s Belgrano

Written by: George Chittenden : 01 May 2019

It was on this day, 2nd May back in 1982 when the Argentine Navy ship the "Belgrano" was controversially torpedoed by the Royal Navy during the Falklands War. The sinking cost the lives of 323 people, which is just over half of Argentine military deaths during the war. The incident was considered controversial as she was attacked outside the 200-nautical-mile total exclusion zone around the Falklands. However legally, exclusion zones are declared for the benefit of neutral vessels. During war, under international law, the heading and location of a belligerent naval vessel has no bearing on its status.

Surprisingly the Captain of the "Belgrano", Hector Bonzo, actually testified that the attack was legitimate. The ARA General Belgrano was a light cruiser. She had previously been named USS Phoenix and saw action in the Pacific during World War II before being sold by the U.S Navy to Argentina. The vessel that sent her to her watery grave was a submarine. The Royal Navy Conqueror became the first nuclear-powered submarine to ever sink a ship, and the second submarine of any kind to sink a ship since the end of World War II.
