Perfectly Preserved 2,300 Year Old Woman's Boot
Written by: Peter Fishlock : 21 Aug 2019
This 2,300 year-old Scythian woman's boot is so wonderfully preserved by the freezing conditions that exist in the Altai Mountains you could be forgiven for walking straight past it at a car boot sale.
Dated at 300BCE this leather boot is decorated with textile, tin or pewter, pyrite crystals, gold foil, and glass beads. The height of the boot is 36 cm. The boot was recovered from Pazyryk Barrow no. 2
Cross section of Barrow
The illustrated diagram is a drawing of a section of Pazyryk Barrow no. 5. dated 252-238 BCE. This gives us an idea of how the barrow was constructed and laid out.
If you ever find yourself in Siberia now you know what to look for!!!
