On This Day… The Mutiny On The Bounty!

Written by: George Chittenden : 27 Apr 2019

It was on this day, 28th April, back in 1789 when the mutiny took place aboard the Royal Navy vessel HMS Bounty whilst the ship was sailing in the South Pacific. The mutiny was led by Acting Lieutenant Fletcher Christian and with the support of a large part of the disgruntled crew he seized control of the ship and set its captain William Bligh and eighteen other members of her crew adrift in a launch. Captain Bligh eventually reached safety after completing an incredible 3,500 nautical mile voyage. On his return to England Bligh informed the Admiralty and they dispatched HMS Pandora to capture the mutineers.

Fourteen of the scallywags were apprehended in Tahiti, but the man who had led the mutiny, Fletcher Christian wasn’t found. Unfortunately, when HMS Pandora began her journey back to England, she collided with the Great Barrier Reef. Thirty-one of her crew and four prisoners from the Bounty died. When the ten surviving mutineers reached England in June 1792, they were court martialled, four were acquitted, three were pardoned, and three were hanged. So, what happened to Fletcher Christian? His remains were discovered in 1808 on Pitcairn Island with the remaining mutineers. Only one was still alive, the rest had killed each other.

Are you already curious to discover what happened tomorrow? Have a great day.
