On This Day… The Landings At Anzac Cove!
Written by: George Chittenden : 25 Apr 2019
It was on this day, 25th April, back in 1915 when the invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula began during World War One. The Gallipoli Campaign’s aim was capturing the Ottoman capital of Constantinople, however it had disastrous consequences and after eight months' fighting, and a huge loss of life on both sides, the campaign was abandoned, and the invasion force was withdrawn to Egypt. The campaign was the only major Ottoman victory of the war. Today marks the anniversary of the landings at Anzac Cove, when the New Zealand and Australian Division, landed on the beaches around Ari Burnu.
Troops landing at Anzac Cove
After a heavy day of fighting they failed to achieve their objectives and requested re-embarkation onto the ships, but the Royal Navy advised that re-embarkation was impossible, and the troops were ordered to dig-in instead. The Ottoman companies held positions on commanding ground and inflicted a huge number of casualties on the Australians before eventually being overcome. The exact number of the day's casualties is not known. The ANZACs had landed two divisions but over two-thousand of their men had been killed or wounded, together with at least a similar number of Turkish casualties. Lest we forget.
