The Despair Of War

Written by: George Chittenden : 19 Jul 2019

This unusual photo looks like a scene out of a film, yet it’s a genuine photo of a distraught lady and a number of Police officers trying to save her life. I imagine many of you are wondering how you could kill yourself from only the second floor, but either side of Ms. Egbert was a spiky iron fence that could have easily impaled her. The image was taken on March 19th, 1942 outside 497 Dean Street in Brooklyn. Poor Ms. Egbert believed her son who had joined the army the previous year had died. The incident caught the attention of over 500 people who gathered to watch the situation unfold.

Eventually officers Ed Murphy and George Munday attempted to persuade her to come back inside the building, and she brandished a mirror and started swinging it at them. In the end she proceeded to sit on the ledge, and the officers pushed her into the net before taking her to hospital. This image may seem comical, but it’s worth considering the despair people went through during the years of war, and the thoughts of their loved ones overseas.
