A Hero’s Farewell
Written by: George Chittenden : 27 Aug 2019
This touching photo was taken in the year 2000 at the state funeral of a Labrador Retriever named Zanjeer. The state funeral was held in Mumbai where this particular dog was an absolute hero. Zanjeer served as a detection dog with the Mumbai Police and held an impeccable service record when it came to detecting explosives and other weapons. Around the time of the 1993 Mumbai bombings in March, Zanjeer helped avert at least three more attacks in Bombay, Mumbra and Thane.
In total, just during that particularly bad period he detected more than 3,329 kgs of the explosive RDX, 600 detonators, 249 hand grenades and 6406 rounds of live ammunition! Zanjeer was trained at the Dog Training Centre of the Criminal Investigation Department in Pune, India. He joined the Mumbai Police Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad on December 29th, 1992. Sadly, Zanjeer developed bone cancer and died on November 16th. He was buried with full state honours.
