A Swimming Pool On Wheels
Written by: George Chittenden : 04 Jul 2019
This incredible photo was taken in 1960 and features New Yorkers finding relief from the sweltering summer heat in one of the city’s swimmobiles. The children probably hadn’t seen such a thing as a swimmobile before, but they certainly knew what to do with it on a hot summer's day. They look like so much fun, don’t they? New York has made a real effort over the years to keep residents cool on hot summer days. They have built bathhouses, community pools, have provided pre-fabricated portable pools and have even constructed floating pools docked off the East River. In 1960 during the Heckscher administration they literally took pools to the streets to underserved areas, so if you couldn’t get to a pool, the city brought a pool to you. The pools were attached to a truck which could be parked on a street all day and conveniently towed away at night.
