The Hungarian Revolution
Written by: George Chittenden : 04 Jul 2019
This photo was taken in during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and features a Hungarian revolutionary burning a photograph of a Lenin statue. The revolution lasted less than three weeks, from Oct 23rd until Nov 10th, but it sent shock waves through Europe for decades. The revolution was simply an uprising against Soviet control. Hundreds of thousands of people made a stand against the occupying Soviet forces and more specifically against the country's brutal, homegrown secret police, the State Protection Authority. Initially it looked like the rebels were going to kick the Russians out altogether, but the Soviets regrouped and launched what can only be considered an all-out assault on a country they were supposedly protecting. The uprising was crushed rather aggressively, resulting in the deaths of roughly 3,000 Hungarian men, women and children. The Soviets wasted no time reinstating their power and were so heavy handed they actually lost support from many Hungarians who up until the rebellion had been sympathetic to their cause. Historians often refer to the uprising as the first rip in the Soviet Union’s iron curtain.
