On This Day… Lest We Forget!
Written by: George Chittenden : 02 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 18th February, back in 1943 when members of an anti-Nazi group, the White Rose movement were arrested. The non-violent, intellectual resistance group consisted of several students and a professor from the University of Munich.
Hans Scholl, Sophie Scholl & Christopher Probst.
The group whose crimes included distributing pamphlets and spraying graffiti, stood trial at the Nazi "People's Court" known as Volksgerichtshof just days later. On February 22nd, 1943, three of the group were found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. They were executed the same day by guillotine at Stadelheim Prison.
They included siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl. All three were noted for the courage with which they faced interrogation by the Gestapo, their trial and even deaths. Today we remember those students who had the courage to make a stand.
