Chemical Attack Preperations

Written by: George Chittenden : 25 Jun 2019

This unusual photo was taken at a London hospital, back in 1940. Due to a nation-wide fear of chemical attack, the British Government issued gas masks to protect people in case the Germans dropped poison gas bombs on Britain. Small children were issued with colourful masks, often depicting Walt Disney’s early characters to make them more appealing, but what about actual babies? Well, as you can imagine protecting babies created a more complex problem. special cradle-like respirators were created and tested, which provided complete enclosure for the baby.

These devices were only to be issued if an emergency situation arose and were suitable for children up to two years old. The device required someone to pump air into the mask. On the side of the mask was an asbestos filter, and this absorbed poisonous gases… and yeah asbestos! The photo was taken during a drill to make sure the hospital could implement the procedures for a poison gas attack

Whilst you are here...

We would like to invite you to claim a place on 'The History Projects' hall of recognition. You might have noticed the Hexagons on the sides of the screen, this is our recognition wall. You can have a picture of your choice on our recognition wall, whether it be you, your dog or even a family member for just £5 a month. This money helps us keep the webpage and our social media content alive and also pays for the other great work we do such as; making documentaries, visiting schools and delivering other great community projects.

Of course, you do not have to give £5 a month. If you would like to donate less or more then of course that is fine, £5 is just how much it costs to get a hexagon. You could sponsor 3 hexagons if you choose or just donate £1 a month or any amount of your choice.

Every contribution we receive from readers such as yourself helps us, help others, and allows us to make sure that the lessons history has taught us will never be lost.
