A Child Schools Adults

This brilliant photo was taken in 1920 in France and shows eight-year-old Samuel Reshevsky simultaneous beating a number of chess masters. Samuel was born in Poland on November 26th, 1911 and started playing chess at the age of four. It didn’t take long for him to be regarded as a child chess prodigy, and he regularly beat chess masters with ease. Shortly after this photo was taken Samuel moved to America with his parents. He continued to play throughout his life, winning the U.S. Chess Championship on eight occasions.
Unfortunately, he never won the World Chess Championship, but he came close on a number of occasions and was a serious contender for decades. He was a phenomenal tactician and excelled at positional play. He took an age over his opening moves, and regularly found himself in time pressure which supposedly unsettled his opponents more than Samuel himself. Surprisingly he never made his living out of chess, but instead applied his calculating mind as an accountant. Samuel Reshevsky died on April 4th, 1992.
