On This Day… Mobsters Ran Away Like Children!
Written by: George Chittenden : 12 Jun 2019
It was on this day, 14th Nov, back in 1957 when the largest known meeting of mafia crime bosses in history took place! It’s known as the Apalachin meeting, as it was held at the home of mobster Joseph "Joe the Barber" Barbara, in Apalachin, New York. Around one-hundred mobsters from the US, Italy, and even Cuba attended the meeting which was organised by Vito Genovese, to recognise his new power as capo dei capi (boss of all bosses).
The meeting was held to discuss various topics including gambling, narcotics trafficking, and loansharking, and to distribute the illegal operations which were controlled by the late Albert Anastasia.
Local police became suspicious when numerous expensive cars began arriving in the sleepy hamlet of Apalachin. When the police raided the meeting many of the high-flying mob bosses ran off into the woods that surrounded the property, but more than sixty were detained and prosecuted following the raid.
