The Breaker Of Chains
Written by: George Chittenden : 27 Aug 2019
This amazing photo was taken in October 1907 and shows a British sailor on the HMS Sphinx removing restraints from a slave in 1907. Now it took quite a while to research this photo, as most of the time this photo is shared on the internet in a misleading way, implying that Britain and its navy were still involved in the despicable slave trade, years after they abolished it. In truth the shackled man in the photo had escaped a slave camp off the Batineh Coast, Oman, with his leg irons still on. Hearing rumours of a Royal Navy ship in the area he fled with five others seeking sanctuary and was given it.
