History's Greatest Speeches Charlie Chaplin's - The Great Dictator Speech
Written by: Peter Fishlock : 04 Jun 2019
In his first speaking role, Charlie Chaplin delivers one of the most moving and thought-provoking speeches in history. The speech of course, is from his masterpiece, The Great Dictator, a movie written, produced, directed, and starring Charlie Chaplin. It premiered on October 15, 1940, while the United States was still promoting appeasement with Nazi Germany. At the time the film came out, the speech was heralded by many as a plea for U.S. intervention in Europe. History remembers the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour as the moment that American opinion swung in favour of entering the war, but without doubt the genius that was Charlie Chaplin, and this exact speech helped.
