
On This Day… The United States Declares Independence ( The First Brexit )

It was on this day, 4th July back in 1776 when the United States declared independence. The key moment in American history took place at the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia. The United States Declaration of Independence stated that the thirteen American colonies then at war with the Kingdom of Great Britain would regard themselves as thirteen independent sovereign states no longer under British rule. The declaration was the first big step in the formation of the United States of America.

The declaration document actually lists the colonial grievances against King George III and Great Britain, justifying its independence. It also contains some of the best statements on human rights ever written. It’s very important that despite America putting itself first these days, it doesn’t forget the moral principles on which the country was built on. The following sentence is from the declaration, and is just as true today as the day it was written…We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
