Raising The Flag At Ground Zero
Written by: George Chittenden : 14 May 2019
This iconic photo was taken on September 11th, 2001 following the attack on the World Trade Center and features three New York City firefighters raising the American flag at Ground Zero. This photo is often compared to the Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal during World War II. This flag raising image was captured by photographer Thomas E. Franklin shortly after 5pm that day. The heroic firefighters in the photo are George Johnson of Rockaway Beach, Dan McWilliams of Long Island and Billy Eisengrein of Staten Island. Interestingly the flag came from a yacht named ‘Star of America’, which was docked in the yacht basin in the Hudson River. Sadly the flag disappeared a few hours after it was raised which set in motion a hunt to relocate it that involved a 2013 CNN documentary film, The Flag, which investigated the mystery of the missing 9/11 icon. Thankfully it was eventually found and was even unveiled on September 11th, 2016, at the 15th anniversary of 9/11.
