Abbey Road
Written by: George Chittenden : 21 Sep 2019
This photo of The Beatles was taken minutes before they crossed the zebra crossing on Abbey Road! The famous Abbey Road album cover is one of music’s most famous and enduring images. It’s a photo that is replicated by tourists visiting London daily. The actual album cover photo was taken by Iain Macmillan who was stood on a ladder in the middle of the road. He was trying to replicate a sketch drawn by Paul McCartney showing what Paul wanted the album cover to look like. It was taken on a particularly hot August day, back in 1969. Surprisingly the entire shoot took only ten minutes and required a police officer to hold the traffic. You may notice that in the historic photo I’ve selected Paul McCartney is wearing sandals, yet in the actual album cover photo he is bare-footed. The album entered the UK charts on October 4th, 1969 at number one, where it remained for eleven weeks. Did you find that interesting?
