The Battle Of Copenhagen

Written by: George Chittenden : 02 Apr 2020

It's time for a challenge! Who is up for it? Who fancies a challenge? Simply read the following 'On This Day' and have a crack at answering the questions. I bet you can't answer them all...

It was on this day, 2nd April, back in 1801 when the British led by Horatio Nelson destroyed the Danish fleet in the naval Battle of Copenhagen, during the Napoleonic Wars. It was the second of Nelson’s big battles, and like the Battle of the Nile, it was also against an enemy at anchor. So why Copenhagen? Britain and Denmark were not formally at war, but the British fleet had sailed in order to discourage the Danes and Swedes from joining forces with Napoleon and the French, but when an ultimatum was sent to Copenhagen it was rejected. Nelson navigated his fleet of fifty-two ships and anchored them five miles off of Copenhagen.

Then Horatio Nelson and other senior officers took a schooner and studied the city’s defences. The decision Nelson made was to attack from the weakest, south-eastern end of the Danish defences, and the assault began. After hours of battle the Danes were overwhelmed and beaten. Nelson offered them a truce, which the Danish commander accepted. The battle was over by 4pm. The British lost around one-thousand men, and the Danish lost twice that. The next day Nelson went ashore and enjoyed a state dinner with Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark. During the dinner he praised the Danes, explaining that the French would not have lasted for one hour at the most, where the Danes had resisted bravely for four hours in battle. Admiral Nelson impressed the Danes and an armistice was signed on the 9th April.

What was the name of Nelson’s flagship during the battle of Copenhagen?

What famous expression is believed to come from this battle?

Who was Captain Edward Parker?

What does Captain Parker have to do with the town of Deal?
