Gudrun Himmler
Written by: George Chittenden : 14 Feb 2020
This rather depressing photograph was taken 1941 when Heinrich Himmler took his twelve-year-old daughter for a day out accompanying him on his official duties, like visiting Dachau Concentration Camp! Despite the fact he was separated from his wife, Himmler remained close to his daughter Gudrun. She lived with her mother in Munich, but Himmler regularly had her flown to his offices in Berlin so he could spend time with her and they were very close. Sadly, we know that children are easily indoctrinated into holding beliefs, and even though her father played one of the most horrific roles during the Holocaust, Gudrun Himmler never saw him for the monster he was. Unfortunately she grew up and still held many of her father’s views, even refusing to take on another name.
When her father committed suicide in the Allied interrogation centre near Luneburg, on May 23rd, 1945, Gudrun was devastated. She refused to believe he’d taken his own life, claiming instead the British had killed him. She even became a member of Stille Hilfe (Silent Help), an organisation which provided support to arrested, condemned or fugitive former SS-members. Gudrun died on 24th May, 2018 at her home near Munich at the age of 88.
