Lyndon B. Johnson’s First Inauguration
Written by: George Chittenden : 08 Feb 2020
This famous photo was taken on Air Force One, on Nov 22nd, 1963, which of course is the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. The image features Lyndon B. Johnson being sworn in as the 36th President by Federal Judge Sarah T. Hughes. The ceremony took place whilst the presidential plane was still at Dallas' Love Field Airport at 2:38 p.m. CST. Kennedy had been shot just over two hours earlier at 12:30 p.m. CST.
The famous photo was taken by Cecil William Stoughton, who had been the official White House photographer since 1961. Interestingly Stoughton was the very first person to hold that post. Up until Kennedy had appointed him to that position official photographs had been taken by random military photographers. In the image you can see the new First Lady, Claudia Alta Taylor Johnson on the left, and a quite understandably stunned-looking Jaqueline Kennedy, who is still wearing the pink Chanel suit, which is stained with her husband's blood.
