The Red Baron And His Dog
Written by: George Chittenden : 15 Jul 2019
This lovely photo was taken in 1916 and shows the Red Baron patting his dog Moritz. The Red Baron’s real name was Manfred von Richthofen, and he became infamous during World War One due to his skills as a fighter pilot. During his brief career he notched up an unbelievable eighty confirmed kills, before being shot down on April 21st, 1918. In Germany he was considered a national hero, so killing him was an achievement for the Allied forces. After his death a British pilot flew over the German aerodrome at Cappy and dropped a note informing the Germans of his demise. The Red Baron was initially buried in France by the British with full military honours, however his body was later exhumed and reburied in his family cemetery at Wiesbaden. Surprisingly, he was only twenty-five years old when he died. Did you find that interesting?
