An Olympic Gold For Sculpture
Written by: George Chittenden : 27 Dec 2019
This photo features a sculpture named ‘An American Trotter’ and was created by Walter W. Winans. Believe it or not, he actually won a gold medal in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics for it in the category of mixed sculpture. If that surprises you, then you might be shocked to learn that in that same year the President of the International Olympic Committee won an Olympic gold in the field of literature.
The modern Olympic Games were created by that future gold medallist in literature, Charles Pierre de Frédy, Baron de Coubertin. The Olympic Art Competitions had been part of his plan from the first modern Olympic Games in 1894, but it wasn’t until 1912 when he finally got the organisers to sponsor the event. Competitions were held for literature, sculpture, painting, architecture and music. Sadly they were not a great success and were scrapped in 1954 because artists were considered to be professionals, while Olympic athletes were required to be amateurs.
