The Warsaw Ghetto Boy
Written by: George Chittenden : 27 Dec 2019
This famous photo was taken during the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto uprising, and features a Jewish boy holding his hands high while a member of the SS aims a submachine gun in his direction. The terrified boy, like many others had hidden in a bunker whilst the ghetto was cleared and thousands were sent to death camps. Eventually the poor souls who were hiding were discovered, and were sent to either Majdanek extermination camp or Treblinka.
This image is one of the most iconic photographs of the Holocaust, and the boy came to represent children in the Holocaust, as well as all Jewish victims. Unfortunately very little is known about this famous photo. The only person who was identified was SS-Rottenführer Josef Blösche, who is the one pointing the submachine gun in the boys direction. It’s likely the image was taken by a man named Albert Cusian, a photographer for Propaganda Company 689, however the identity of the photographer was never proven, nor was the identity of the poor boy.
