Louis And The Sphinx
Written by: George Chittenden : 15 Jul 2019
This amazing photo was taken in 1961 and shows Louis Armstrong playing for his wife Lucille near the Sphinx in Egypt. During the Cold War America was worried that third world countries could fall under Communist influence, so they sent out Cultural Ambassadors to display the cultural freedoms enjoyed in America. Several distinguished jazz musicians including Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington engaged in what was nicknamed “Jazz Diplomacy.” The ambassadors were sent to the Middle East and even South America to deliver their message. Louis Armstrong married his fourth wife, Lucille Wilson, in October 1942. The couple lived happily until his death in 1971. It was widely believed that Louis Armstrong didn’t have any children, however a few years back it came to light that in actual fact he had fathered one child with a mistress. Did you find that interesting?
