On This Day… Mysterious Hoof Prints Are Found
Written by: George Chittenden : 01 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 8th February, back in 1855 when a very strange incident was recorded in history. It happened in the county of Devon, England. The winter had been extremely cold that year with temperatures remaining near freezing from January until March. This constantly cold temperature meant that snow didn’t melt, and every new snowfall just added a new layer over the terrain, providing the perfect conditions for the strange events of that night.
On this day, mysterious hoof marks appeared all over Devon. The marks were three inches wide and for inches long, at intervals between eight and sixteen inches. Supposedly, Reports came in from thirty different locations. The combined footprints had a reported length of between forty and one-hundred miles.
Bizarrely, the hoof prints were found on the snow-covered roofs of houses, frozen rivers, haystacks and even on top of high walls! So, what do you think? Did the devil visit England that night? I think this is a great example of how an historic event can evolve and become more and more exaggerated over time, but I guess we’ll never know for sure.
