On This Day… Women Drivers!

Written by: George Chittenden : 08 Jul 2019

It was on this day, 7th March, back in 1908 when Cincinnati Mayor Mark Breith stood before City Council and announced that, “woman are just not physically suited to operate automobiles”. Back then in 1908 motor vehicles were extremely uncommon and were mostly toys for the super-rich.

The first practical automobile was only invented in 1885, however women had of course been driving horse drawn vehicles for centuries. Thankfully when driving licenses were introduced back in 1910, there was no law to prevent a woman holding one. Early vehicles were terrifyingly loud for horses and their owners who were still on the road, which caused many problems on the streets on America.

Of course, the switch between horse and car was rapid. Statistics kept by the nascent Automobile Club of America recorded that in 1909 there were 200,000 motorized vehicles in the United States. Just seven years later, in 1916, there were 2.25 million!

We promote history by...

offering free articles and videos, providing free history experiences for children in schools and on weekends. Next year we will be visiting hospitals and providing unforgettable experiences to children who really need it and give them a chance to forget their condition, their treatment and their reality. Please join others who support our free projects by giving a small donation. We can only continue our great work with your help.
