On This Day… King George 6th Died
Written by: George Chittenden : 27 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 6th February, back in 1952 when George VI, King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth, was found dead in his bed at Sandringham House in Norfolk. He died from coronary thrombosis, a blocking of blood flow to the heart because of a blood clot in an artery.
George ruled England for almost sixteen years after his brother, Edward VIII, abdicated the throne in 1936. Following the death of King George VI, his daughter Elizabeth became Queen. At the time she was away on a diplomatic visit to Kenya with her husband Philip, where they heard the tragic news.
The King’s funeral took place at Windsor Castle, on the 15th Feb. Fifty years later, in 2002, the remains of his wife, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and the ashes of his daughter Margaret were interred in the chapel alongside him.
