On This Day… British Children Finally Recieved A Treat!
Written by: George Chittenden : 01 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 5th February, back in 1953 when sweet rationing ended in Britain! Kids all over the country emptied their piggybanks and popped down to the nearest sweet-shop, to experience the treats that war had denied them.
Toffee apples were the biggest sellers, closely followed by sticks of nougat and liquorice strips. Many firms simply gave their sweets away, handing out sweets to all comers. Adults joined in the fun too, and many men bought 2 lb boxes of chocolates for their loved ones.
Rationing came into force on 8th January 1940, a few months after the start of World War II. The process of de-rationing began in 1948 but made slow progress until 1953.

We promote history by...
offering free articles and videos, providing free history experiences for children in schools and on weekends. Next year we will be visiting hospitals and providing unforgettable experiences to children who really need it and give them a chance to forget their condition, their treatment and their reality.
