On This Day

On This Day… Spanish Flu!

Written by: George Chittenden : 07 Jul 2019

It was on this day, 4th March, back in 1918 when the deadly influenza pandemic known as Spanish Flu started to take hold. It was the H1N1 influenza virus and it infected 500 million worldwide. Estimates vary on how many people it actually killed, but it was somewhere between 50 - 100 million people.

Interestingly it’s known as Spanish Flu, as wartime censors minimised early reports of illness and mortality in Germany, Britain, France and America to preserve morale. Spain who were a neutral country with respect to WWI, reported the pandemic accurately which gave the impression that Spain was harder hit.

It was on this day back in 1918, when an outbreak appeared at Fort Riley in the U.S and hospitalised five-hundred soldiers in less than a week.

We promote history by...

offering free articles and videos, providing free history experiences for children in schools and on weekends. Next year we will be visiting hospitals and providing unforgettable experiences to children who really need it and give them a chance to forget their condition, their treatment and their reality. Please join others who support our free projects by giving a small donation. We can only continue our great work with your help.
