On This Day… The Corpse That Was Beheaded!
Written by: George Chittenden : 30 Jun 2019
It was on this day, 30th January, back in 1661 when the corpse of Oliver Cromwell was hanged in chains, drawn and quartered, and then beheaded in a mock execution. A few days earlier Cromwell’s remains had been removed from their resting place in Westminster Abbey and transported to Tyburn.
The strange execution was on the anniversary of Charles Ist death and was considered revenge for the regicide that had been committed, as Cromwell had signed Charles’ death warrant years earlier.
The severed head of Oliver Cromwell was displayed on a tall spike outside Westminster Abbey, where it remained for twenty-four years!
