On This Day… The Most Incredible Escape In History?
Written by: George Chittenden : 07 Jul 2019
It was on this day, 3rd March, back in 1934 when Dillinger performed one of the most incredible escapes in history, by breaking out of jail using a piece of wood he’d carved into the shape of a gun. John Dillinger robbed twenty-four banks during his career and was being held at the county jail in Crown Point, Indiana, for the murder of a Chicago police officer when the incident occurred.
Surprisingly Dillinger immobilised the entire security of Crown Point armed with a piece of wood and his wits. The man the F.B.I once named as their "Public Enemy Number One", locked ten guards and several trustees in his cell before stealing a police car for his escape.
Eventually Dillinger was caught at the Biograph Theatre in Chicago on July 22nd, 1934, where he was shot and killed.
