On This Day… A Genius And A Flogged Horse!
Written by: George Chittenden : 26 Jun 2019
It was on this day, 3rd January back in 1889 when the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche broke down at the sight of a horse being flogged. The incident happened in Turin. Nietzsche had left his lodgings in the throes of a manic episode and walked a short distance to a nearby square.
It was in the square where he witnessed the horse being flogged by its owner, and threw himself towards the animal, embracing it. Slumping to the floor in tears Nietzsche was almost arrested for disturbing the peace. Eventually his landlord took him back home. Sadly, the remaining years of Friedrich Nietzsche’s life were spent under care, and in a state of madness. The horse incident marks the definitive moment, between great philosopher and broken mind.
