On This Day… The Final Beatles Concert

Written by: George Chittenden : 28 May 2019

It was on this day, 29th August, back in 1963 when the Beatles performed their very last commercial concert. The gig that ended an era took place at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California, and it marked the end of a four-year period that was dominated by almost constant touring. It’s quite an incredible number, but during those four years the Beatles made over 1,400 concert appearances internationally.

Candlestick Park wasn’t the final time they were seen in public playing music together. Years later in January 1969 they made an unannounced live appearance on the rooftop of the Apple building. It certainly didn’t mark the end of their music careers either, and they continued to produce music together, releasing albums such as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The White Album and Let It Be during a period which is often referred to as ‘the studio years’.

At that final concert at Candlestick Park, the Beatles took to the stage at 9.27pm and performed eleven songs. They knew it was to be their final concert, and John Lennon and Paul McCartney took a camera onto the stage. The pair took pictures of the crowd, the rest of the group, and themselves at arm's length.

We promote history by...

offering free articles and videos, providing free history experiences for children in schools and on weekends. Next year we will be visiting hospitals and providing unforgettable experiences to children who really need it and give them a chance to forget their condition, their treatment and their reality.
