On This Day… Reaching The Summit Of Everest

Written by: George Chittenden : 24 May 2019

It was on this day, 29th May back in 1953 when Mount Everest, Earth's highest mountain above sea level was finally conquered when Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit. The pair were part of the 1953 British Mount Everest expedition, led by Colonel John Hunt. Interestingly neither Edmund Hillary nor Tenzing Norgay were British. Edmund Hillary was from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay was Nepalese. The pair made history when they reached the summit at 11:30 am. They remained there long enough to snap some photos and bury some sweets and a small cross in the snow. After reaching the top of the world Edmund Hillary devoted himself to assisting the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he created.

Over the years he helped build many schools and hospitals, served as New Zealand's High Commissioner to India and Bangladesh, and as Ambassador to Nepal. When he died in 2008, he was honoured with a state funeral in New Zealand. Tenzing Norgay went on to enjoy a long career climbing. In 1978 he founded a company providing trekking adventures in the Himalayas, and in July 2015 the highest known mountain range on the planet Pluto was named after him.

We promote history by...

offering free articles and videos, providing free history experiences for children in schools and on weekends. Next year we will be visiting hospitals and providing unforgettable experiences to children who really need it and give them a chance to forget their condition, their treatment and their reality. Please join others who support our free projects by giving a small donation. We can only continue our great work with your help.
